In 1752 Ferdinand Berthoud, then aged just 25, presented a longcase régulateur to the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris, which successfully adjusted for the difference between solar and mean time (which can be up to 16 minutes a year). ‘Paris is usually associated with the best-quality movements.’ ‘If horological wizardry is your thing, concentrate on the later Louis XV and Louis XVI periods,’ says the specialist. ‘French clocks from the first half of the 18th century tend to have fairly simple movements, so are often collected for the name attached to the ornamental appeal of their cases instead of their complex mechanics,’ explains Strafford.Īfter the 1750s there were a number of technological advances made within the movements of French clocks. Christie’s specialists are always on hand to explain which names signal the best quality. Dial and movementįrench clocks can sometimes come with as many as three names attached - the maker of the case, the maker of the dial, and the maker of the enamelling for the dial.

Everyone thought is was very martha stewart. The 19th-century French carriage clock shown above has an eight-day movement (designed to be wound only once a week), as well as a full calendar, moon-phase dial, barometer and thermometer. I brought it to a party whole and cut it when I got there. I would use goat cheese and top with basil instead. It looked beautiful, but I did not like the marjoram taste. Good quality ciabatta is key - the holes soak up the juices and the crust remains crispy! Next time I will also add a some garlic to the roasting pan. They are very sweet and needed quite a bit of salt to balance flavor (be sure to taste for salt at end of roasting phase). The crispiness of the ciabatta was fantastic contrast to the juicy tomatoes (also used some yellow grape tomatoes along with the red one's). New Year's 2006 Progressive Dinner hit! I took the advise of previous reviewers and added lots of fresh basil along with slightly less marjoram. Using a little cheese to balance the sweet. Mulitude of cherry/grape tomatoes from the I roasted the tomatoes as instructed but instead of placing it onto bread and toasting I pored it over goat cheese and served with crackers. I made this for a wine tasting picnic and everyone loved it! I did change the recipe slightly.
Have left overs? Try serving over chicken or pasta. I make the tomato mixture as is and serve with french bread rounds on the side. This is a phenomenal, easy recipe that can be made in advance. I don't understand why there aren't more reviews here. I usedĭried marjoram and a sweet locally made balsamic. I loved this recipe! Delicious and so simple to Am making it the second time in 2 weeks ! I cut down on the red pepper since it was for kids too and went with basil instead of marjoram. The benefit is that you can make the topping one day ahead so you have less to deal with on the day you are entertaining.
Serving, Everything goes Better with Cheese :)Ī slightly diff take on bruschetta.
I served it at a party last night and it was the least favorite of all my epi recipies.Ĭiabatta before adding the tomatoes. I used dried marjoram (added the last 10 mins). I reduced this to 2/3-lb (2c) cherry tomatoes for two people and there were just a few tomatoes leftover. I love marjoram but I can imagine that it would taste good with almost any fresh herb.
